It May Be Diesel's Turn to Shine As Americans Yawn at Hybrids

Forbes -- American consumers are boosting their interest in — and loyalty to — clean-diesel engines at the same time they’re demonstrating more and more indifference to hybrids.

“Repurchase loyalty” for diesel powertrains increased by nearly 10 percentage points last year compared with 2008 while consumer repurchase rates for hybrid technology remained about flat at 35 percent, according to new data compiled by R.L. Polk. Diesel’s jump in repurchase loyalty as measured by Polk hasn’t been reported, while news about hybrid-repurchase trends was widespread yesterday.

Diesel-repurchase loyalty was up by about 9 percentage points over the three years, to 28 percent last year from 19 percent in 2008, reported the Southfield, Mich.-based auto-research firm.

actually screw the EPA go back to the old engines gas or diesel - the military doesnt abide by EPA rules so why should we (oh yeah BIG BROTHER said so) what a joke - who cares about the environment its eventually going to burn up and there is nothing that you or any politician can do about it so just enjoy life the way it was and if you want change take OBAMA and all the other politicians and keep all the change you want to yourselves on an island on the south pole(you can choose whatever island you want when you get there) :)

"Clean-diesel" is a good option. Europe relies on it.

southtown: diesel is still not at all stations, but lots more.

And yes, Europeans know that diesel is the more economical fuel. Now, if only we could go away from growing corn to make EtOH and instead put rapeseed plants to work for a nice smelling addition to fossil diesel....

diesels outsell gas cars in Europe.
remember 20 yrs ago, u couldn't find a diesel pump, now there @ every station. Come on America, lets get some new clean burnin' diesels in cars & esp a light smaller trucks. - 25 & 45mpg, i can live with that, for now.

Diesel MPG would have be well north of 40 in the city to justify the higher price for fuel.

I remember when diesel was less than gas, now look at it. Trucks move our home goods all over this country. I'm sure if there is an increase in diesel then you will not only be paying more to fill up with diesel but also food, clothes, furniture, etc.

I own a diesel and will ONLY buy diesel autos in the future, but I would like more choices! What about a diesel hybrid? How about more diesel options in American cars? By default I am limited to European autos now.

Diesel is not a good option for most people. Diesels need good care and are very expensive to maintain properly.

It is interesting to know more about the diesel option. A hybrid is my next car (years from now), but maybe by that time, diesel fuel will make more sense.

The new EPA regulations are hard on diesel engines. The DPF (diesel particulate fitter) and EGR systems tends to clog if you don’t do enough highway driving or have a lot of idle time. These mandated components and other EPA regulations also have a very bad effect on MPG. They also have a NOX reduction system that involves the injection of urea in the exhaust stream. So you have to keep your urea tank filled as well as the fuel tank. We buy it in bulk so I can’t give you a cost on that. If things keep going the way they are the diesel engine will go the way of the coal fired power plant and for the same reason. The omnipotent EPA will regulate them out of existence.

Slowly but surely we are understanding the value of diesel. Up to 30% more efficient than a gasoline engine. Long life span, higher torque. We export the heck out of it because we don't consume enough here.

More passenger car diesel engines and more commercial class 8 CNG conversions. Let's build a bridge to the future to the next energy source.

Go CNG, Go Diesel.

don't buy diesel powertrains. It will increase the demand on diesel and cause the price to increase. Then I will have to pay more to fill up my diesel powered vehicle and I don't want to give it up.

I can't envision a hybrid that can pull my 40' fifth-wheel or a 30' stock trailer ... my pair of Dodge duallies both get around 22 - 28 mpg ... ( not a typo ) ... they're both chipped with 4" exhaust, K&N intake, & lockup converters ... although I believe there are a few good hybrids out there ... they're currently not practical for me ... diesel is king ...

The modern diesel powered vehicles are the better option in my opinion. This is especially true if the majority of the driving is highway miles.

Isn't it interesting that Diesel gas goes thru only half of the refining steps that regular unleaded does, yet costs more??????? Hummm, figure that one out

The Europeans figured out that diesels were more efficient years ago, but then their prices are way higher, so it got their attention sooner.

Diesel and GDI gas engines, like the new Ford Focus, or Mazdas with SkyActiv, or Kias with GDI - offer impressive performance from smaller, more efficient four-cyls. The GDI engines cost little more than conventional gas. Diesel still has an upfront premium, but even better mileage - averaging 20% better in similar chassis, and loads of torque, which of course Americans are used to with their preference for larger engines.

What Americans want is to get the huge improvements in fuel economy without having to pay for them.

So if you can make it look, act, and cost exactly like the competing gasoline powered cars and truck, then you will be able to sell as many as you can make.

But the status quo in alternate fuels and super economical cars and trucks are not what's going to sell in the USA in large numbers.

So, figure out how to bring down the cost of diesel cars and trucks, as well as diesel fuel, and diesel has a chance to be the big game changer in the USA.
